The Logo Fyles

- 17 -

As the train shoogied upstate toward Oxlands, Brond asked Alamort what she knew about Gobbo.

"You'd like an apercu? Certain-ment. They have been skeldering suckers in Wordgame parlors for months. Not just you. Skudler believes they are trying to finance some master sicko scheme. Also, they are accumulating top grade computer equipment."

"Perhaps that's what their using the money for?"

"No, it doesn't look like it. The computer emptions have all been fineered with bodgie credit cards."

"What do we know about the big scheme?

"Skudler isn't saying. But he seems sure that it will undermine everything this country stands for."

"Hmm. If I know Skudler, that either means it will threaten the CIAOS budget or his portfolio."

"Bitter, Kam. Why do you dislike Skudler so much? He's not a bad old mouchard. But you seem troubled. Still brooding because I solved the problem before you did?"

"I just don't see how this plan can work. The gruppetto all know me. They will spot me as a bunyip in a second."

Alamort giggled. "Yes, a faitor manque."

Brond thought for a moment. "Maybe Skudler doesn't want me to infiltrate them. Maybe he wants another attentat.

"Hmm. Yes, that might be. Wait until they go for you, then stage a bodrag and round them up."

Brond's dark mood turned darker.

"Not worried, are you Kam? Don't forget, I'll be there, watching out for you." She reached into a large bag. "We still have an hour before Oxlands. How about a game? You look like you could do with some practice. The competition is going to be stiff. Even if they are just a bunch of memorizing hacks."

Alamort went first and put down LUPANAR at 6e.

Brond said, "Nice play, but you seem a bit rusty."

Alamort looked hurt. "Why do you say that, mon cher?"
