Subject: PART THREE STELLAR REPORT ON FREMONT, OHIA

When I sat down to play Gene Murray, he has those rather LARGE tiles with the BIG letters on them.. I said "MY MY, these are really BIG". He smiled and said "They are for OLD people that drink ENSURE"! We both started to laugh and I made sure that I wrote it down on my score sheet so that I wouldn't forget it for my report. He is such a cutie....

Luise Shafritz and Marty Gabriel were playing a game. Marty had only one second left, so he literally threw down STAVE as an out play, hooking the S on some other word, with the tiles not at all in their indentations but in the approximate correct positions. He very quickly said the score, and neutralized the clock with blazing speed, so that the clock read 0:00. Luise put the clock back on his time, as he hadn't marked down her score or the total score before making his play. She stated her belief that it was in the rule book that he had to do this before he could make his play. They called over the director. Flossie was going thru the rule book, and so was Luise, but they couldn't find it. Stocky was called over for the opinion of yet another director. He stated that he didn't think that Marty needed to write down the score ... that it was okay, as long as there were no tiles left in the bag (however, if there are tiles in the bag, one must record the total score before you drawing one's new tiles). Stocky didn't stick around to find all this in the rules, however, since he wanted to get back to finalizing the score of his own last game (about which he recently posted to CGP). Luise dropped the protest at this point, and Marty was not given a time penalty. Later, it was apparently discovered that LUISE had not marked down MARTY's scores in her haste to play quickly and catch HIM on time.

It is only when the bag is EMPTY that you are apparently relieved from the need to do write down the cumulative score. They probably discovered that Luise had not recorded HIS moves when they attempted to determine the final score.

These two stories about the games involving Jean Carol and Luise, are only to point out that these things do happen in real life situations and that you should know the rules. It might make a difference in whether you lose or win the game; lose points on your clock; and when you can still challenge and so forth..
