SCRABBLE (registered trademark) Brand Crossword Game is hereinafter referred to as SCRABBLE.

Yesterday I posted some early dreg results. Here are some later dreck results. There is also a little about other divisions after the important Novice Section complete results.

The 1998 Martin Luther King Reno SCRABBLE tournament has four sections:

    Expert 32 players unlimited rating
    Intermediate 37 players < 1600 rating
    Recreational 22 players < 1300 rating
    Novice 22 players < 1100 rating

for a total of 113 players.

The first part of the tournament was a quasi round robin of 13 rounds. The next part will be quads (four person round robins). The final round 17 will be KOTH.

The Novice standings after round 13:

 6 19 John Green 683 9 + 78
 7 17 Joseph Perkowski 711 9 - 297
 8 1 Cynthia Ho 1088 8 + 639
 9 7 Julia Bogle 969 8 + 197
10 12 Sandy Yerkes 835 8 + 17
11 3 Evi Pike 1027 7 + 442
12 10 Jim Barker 910 7 + 127
13 6 Judith Whitcomb 973 7 - 13
14 4 Eve Jones 999 5 - 3
15 18 Laurie Longway 703 5 - 117
16 21 Paula Catanese 500 5 - 342
17 16 Sharon Perkowski 740 4 - 545
18 8 Gretchen Richmond 960 3 - 691
19 20 Jacqueline Veevers 568 3 - 780
20 13 Judith Romanenkov 832 2 - 574
21 14 Charlotte Bremond 750 2 - 667
22 16 Letty Dolphin 735 2 - 717

Five of the eight rated between 1000 and 1099 elected to play in the next higher section. As we all know the SCRABBLE rating system is broken and puts higher rated players in a section at a disadvantage. The five that are playing up are sacrificing any chance for prize money in order to earn rating points. The three that aren't playing up are sacrificing rating points to win prize money.

David Moss appears to be a ringer. Paula Catanese's only previous tournament was about ten years ago.
