History

DOoM was originally developed in 1993 in Perl 3 with custom object-oriented extensions as an easily implemented and easily maintainable MUDlike TCP/IP server for interactive crossword games. There have been four DOoMs since then with (as of late 2000) over six thousand users and almost 200,000 rated games played in English and French.

Design Goals

The DOoM user interface will be updated to be primarily graphical and accessible through a Java-enabled web browser. The server architecture will be scalable to permit an increase in the user population from the current tens of simultaneous users to at least hundreds and ideally thousands. Server-side code will be written in platform-independent Perl.

Backward Compatibility

In order to minimize transitional stress for the existing DOoM player community, a text-based interface with compatible command line interface will be implemented.
