I first met Mike in May, 1978, at the first North American Championship. We quickly became friends, and I have many fond memories of him over the years. The best one, I think, was at the first Canadian Championship two years ago -- a tournament which never would have happened without his efforts. Before play, on the first night, Mike gave us a narrative on the history of Canadian Scrabble. He was modest about his own achievements both in what he said and how he said it, but I remember thinking that so much of what he was recalling never would have happened without his hard work and guidance. It was clear to me that his devotion to Canadian Scrabble was at the centre of his interests. Mike was a very fine tournament director, but beyond that he will be remembered as the father of Canadian tournament Scrabble. And also as a very fine person.
