Subject: Re: The passing away of Mike Wise
I was shocked to hear of Mike's passing away.
I met Mike twice - during my 2 visits to the Toronto club (1996,1998). He made me feel very welcome - as if I was the most important player at the club those evenings. I think he had a special 'soft spot' for members of the Jerusalem club. Now I think I know why:
[Sam Orbaum wrote:]
We at The Jerusalem Scrabble Club owe him a debt of gratitude. In 1983, when I founded the club, I had no idea what to do. I wrote Mike, asking for pointers. He sent me back a 14-page handwritten letter, detailing exactly how he runs his club. The JSC was modeled almost precisely on his -- and what a model! If Toronto is the best attended club in North America, Jerusalem is the biggest club in the world, a true testament to Mike's qualities.
I felt right at home in the Toronto club. Sam runs the club here exactly like Mike ran the Toronto one. Even the attendance figures are similar. If there were more Mike Wises around North America, club attendance would increase many-fold.
May his memory be an inspiration to both directors and players for years to come.
