NSA Club #3 June 2001 Tournament: Week One

Please arrive promptly for tournament games. There will be brief announcements at 7:25 P.M. and your clock may be started in absentia at 7:30 P.M. If you are unable to attend, are stuck in traffic or otherwise going to be late, please call John at 416-876-7675.

A Division

As of the start of the tournament, Zev has a significant lead in the race for the club championship but he hasn't yet clinched it. Since any of the top four players could win the championship, the pairings are arranged so that they will play each other in a round robin on the third evening. (For those interested in the details of the pairing system: the players are divided into thirds and over the course of the tournament each player will play three people from each third.)

Cash prizes will be awarded to the players who finish first, second and third in this tournament, as well as to the highest finishing player from the bottom-seeded six. The winner of the club championship (based on club performance rating) will receive a keeper trophy and custody of the championship trophy.

B Division

As of the start of the tournament, Sal, Stuart and Trevor are within two games of each other in the lead for the B Division Championship. Since we have an odd number of players (thirteen), there will be one player sitting out a bye each round and six games played. For the first two evenings, the twelve active players will be arranged by pre-tournament ranking into quartiles and each player will play one player from each other quartile. Pairings for the last evening will be determined based on standings in both the club championship race and this tournament. There may be repeated pairings in round 9.

The winner of the divisional championship (based on club performance rating) will receive a keeper trophy and custody of the championship trophy.

C Division

As of the start of the tournament, Betty C has clinched the divisional championship. Players will therefore only have NSA ratings, club ratings and cash prizes at stake. On each of the first two evenings there will be two round robin groups of four and a partial round robin group of six. Players will be assigned to groups based on pre-tournament ratings for the first evening, and tournament standings for the second evening. Pairings for the third evening are yet to be determined, but may involve a repeated pairing in the last round.
