CGP Report on Kingston 2000
The 16th annual interclub match between the Toronto and Montreal
Scrabble clubs was held this weekend on neutral but familiar territory
at the Days Inn midway between the two cities in Kingston ON. At stake
this year were the Kingston Cup for the winner of the A Division and
the 401 Trophy for the winner of the B DIvision.
The tournament was started in 1985 by Mike Wise and Bernard
Gotlieb. Bernard Gotlieb and Lynda Wise maintained their perfect
attendance record, while Ray Francis missed the event for the first
time, to help look after his newborn twin daughters. Detailed

Following long tradition we played in a friendly and informal
atmosphere. Challenges were adjudicated by other players (and
occasionally my brother, who was operating Zev Kaufman's clock on the
Sabbath), second opinions (of which I believe there was only one) by
codirectors Bernard Gotlieb or myself, and as we do not keep track of
spread games would occasionally end with a resignation in the late- or
endgame.
We tried a novel pairing system this time, codesigned by Dave Boys and
myself, the details of which can also be seen at the tournament web
page. In brief, you could play anyone in either division of the
opposing team, and the trophies were awarded based on total wins by the
members of each division.
Toronto's A Team was 42-30 vs. Montreal's A Team and 24-8 vs. their
B Team for a total of 66 wins to Montreal's 51, breaking a 5-game
winning streak to bring the Kingston Cup back to Toronto.
Montreal's B Team was 33-26 vs. Toronto's B Team and 8-24 vs. our
A Team for a total of 41 wins to Toronto's 37 (astute readers will
deduce that TB was 11-21 vs. MA) and takes the 401 Trophy.
