Subject: Consensus Game #1, Turn #6
Message-id: <199802080603.BAA01003@coxeter.math.toronto.edu>
(A selection of archived CGP postings from this consensus game can be found in http://www.poslarchive.com/math/cgp/consensus.)
In reply to some consensus game correspondence this week:
I agree with Tracy Cobbs' description of the intent of a consensus game as being to promote the discussion of strategy. It's for that reason, for instance, that I ask that people e-mail me their votes privately if they don't have anything else to say about their choice.
This isn't a test of who has a Franklin or a copy of Maven. If anything, it's a test of who has the best understanding of the game, and can express it in the clearest and most persuasive manner. If you're concerned that by voting for a move that you might not have been able to find unassisted you may somehow give the impression of 'cheating', then by all means confess if it will make you feel better. But when you post your vote to the mailing list, explain why you chose it.
Please also bear in mind that it's the move that receives the largest number of voting points that is chosen in this game. The second- and fourth-ranked choices this turn differ only in their designation of the blank, and had their votes been counted together, they would have ranked first. On the other hand, even combined they didn't come close to a majority of voting points cast.
Back to business. Thirty-nine players voted this turn, not including two spoiled ballots. Thank you all for voting. The move chosen was 3F CUL(L)IONS (72), you draw AINRTTU, and opponent has replied A4 MAN(T)EAU (87).

E-mail your vote for cgp's next move to the list if it comes with interesting commentary, or privately to me otherwise. If you ignore this request and include commentary to me, I may consider it for publication at the CGP archive. If you do not want me to do so, please say so in your message. I will send an acknowledgement message to private votes unless they arrive right before the deadline, but not to cgp votes unless specifically requested. Don't forget to include your rating, and be clear that you're voting. That is, say "I vote for X and my rating is Y" somewhere in your message rather than "I think X looks like the best play, especially after reading about it all week". Double-check your play - did you specify the starting square, direction and blank (if any) correctly? If you send me a vote for an illegal play, I will consider it a spoiled ballot, and notify you accordingly; if you mistakenly vote for the wrong play, you may not find out until the end of the week.
