Subject: Consensus Game #1, Turn #7
Message-id: <199802150742.CAA01334@coxeter.math.toronto.edu>

(A selection of archived CGP postings from this consensus game can be found in http://www.poslarchive.com/math/cgp/consensus.)

In reply to some consensus game correspondence this week:

Rich Baker asked how the voting would have differed last turn if the votes for CoCOUNSEL and COCoUNSEL had been combined. Those two plays together would have earned 3,495 voting points, CUlLIONS and CULlIONS 3,109 VP and all other plays combined 4,436. As I said, I'll leave the voting system the way it is throughout this game (something to keep in mind when you cast your vote), but will call for suggestions about how to improve the system at the end of the game.

I think Stu's three-phase 'vote, listen, revote' method is fine (except for the protocol-theoretical potential for deadlock), but don't see why one need put the first and second votes in separate messages.

At the suggestion of Jeff W and others, I will begin including a list of unseen tiles with the board.

I have accepted votes involving presumably unintentional phonies. I am now sending back automatic confirmation of the vote that was registered, and place the onus on the voter to vote correctly if they so desire.

Fern, I think it's up to individual players to decide how much computer or other assistance (including simulation) they want to use, how much they want to share it with the list, and how much they want to pay attention to what others have to say. We each have our own ways of deciding what the best play might be.

Thank you all for continuing to participate in this game, I'm enjoying it very much myself, and look forward to posting my racks and analyses for your scrutiny at the end of the game.

And now, the vote. Forty-four players cast votes this turn, and the winning move (by a margin of potentially less than one player) was H1 UNLIT (15). You have drawn ELOR to your leave of ART, and opponent (after consultation with Messrs Logan and Wapnick) has replied L1 KENT (26).

I will be away on holiday next week, so the move deadline will be two weeks from today instead of the usual one week. I will not be sending out vote confirmations between February 17th and 25th, but will send out confirmations on the 25th or 26th for all votes received during that period.

Instructions:

E-mail your vote for cgp's next move to the list if it comes with interesting commentary, or privately to me otherwise. If you ignore this request and include commentary to me, I may consider it for publication at the CGP archive. If you do not want me to do so, please say so in your message. I will send an acknowledgement message to private votes unless they arrive right before the deadline, but not to cgp votes unless specifically requested. Don't forget to include your rating, and be clear that you're voting. That is, say "I vote for X and my rating is Y" somewhere in your message rather than "I think X looks like the best play, especially after reading about it all week". Double-check your play - did you specify the starting square, direction and blank (if any) correctly? If you send me a vote for an illegal play, I will consider it a spoiled ballot, and notify you accordingly; if you mistakenly vote for the wrong play, you may not find out until the end of the week.
