First, in response to CHAYOTE, say "nice play." Against a human opponent, first say "hold." With free challenges, say "Better have a look at that one before I hook it with my S," and stop the clock.

Second, don't take more than a few seconds choosing among JADES, JANES, and JEANS. But with the luxury of time, choose (as I do) 12a JANES, with no Ns on the board and about a one-in-three chance of getting the undesirable LNN after JADES, but the same one-in-three of getting a nice DLN after JANES. JANES over JEANS to keep the vowel away from 13c.
