Chalk up another preference for the horizontal play, lld WEND. I like having the h11-15 line in case I get a clunky consonant and can make a SHULN-like play. I reject 14a WAND, DAWN, and LAWN because of the easy-money ZOO or (after DAWN) AZO possibilities. I won't create an opening that I'm not a threat to use. The vertical WEND opens DIN(-)/ZIN/AND, but if my N-drawing ability continues, I may be cashing that myself; it also has the defensive plus of reducing 15h to an S-square, as has been well stated. But the horizontal play leaves the vowel at 14b open for 8LBs; horizontal it is. Those who preferred the LD leave last time (as I did) should not be so enamored of the combination as to play j6 WyNNS.
Also supporting the 11d placement is the person who wrote "In the tranquil landscape, and especially in the distant line of the HORIZON, man beholds somewhat as beautiful as his own nature." Hard to argue with that.
