Brond pushed aside thoughts of Alamort and Sneb and his narrow escape from the attentat, and scanned the car for something to read. He rejected a thick and tattered-looking Peterman's magalog, but found, outjutting beneath it, the Tuckahoe Scunge. Looks like a local tabloidy rag, Brond thought, waling it with pleasure.
After a few minutes, the reassuring talea of wheels on tracks made him drowsy. His eyes kept closing as he read an op-ed piece about protesters in Dogbolt County, Calif.. The writer had scant sympathy for them, Brond noted. Just a bunch of ecofreaks getting their knickers in a knot over a little forest depletion. The wollies did their duty, got them out of the jobsworth's office, etcetera. The daubing was a "last resort." Brond imagined the politician shouting to the rozzers, "Quick, for god's sake, someone smear pepper in their eyes before they ... sit here some more." He tossed the paper and dossed down.
He thought his eyes had been shut for only a moment, but when he opened them, there was a single sheet of paper on his lap. It held a diagram:
