SCRABBLE (registered trademark) Brand Crossword Game is hereinafter referred to as SCRABBLE.

Final dreck results. There is also a little about other divisions after the important Novice Section complete results.

Apologies for not getting this out last night. Laurie Longway, Rick Wong and I drove to Reno. We left promptly after the awards ceremony. Donner Pass was open with no chain requirements. As we approached the California Agricultural Inspection Station traffic was stopped. We missed making it through by about four car lengths. It was snowing on Donner Pass and CHP was clearing several spinouts. Three hours, and a very useful SCRABBLE lesson given by Rick Wong (1842) to Laurie (703) and me (683) later, we started moving.

Chain rules were in effect. I was gouged $49 + Tax for chains. When I asked for a receipt it was stamped: "All Sales Final. No Refunds. No Returns. No Warranty." The links seemed much lighter gauge than the set my father owned years ago and which he used for at least fifteen years. My chains lasted almost 10 miles before breaking. However we did get over the summit.

It took a mere 10 hours 50 minutes with no stops for food or gas or anything else other than chains to make it the 260 miles from Regency Sands to Los Gatos. I didn't have the energy to compose this message at 00:45 last night.

The 1998 Martin Luther King Reno SCRABBLE tournament has four sections:

    Expert 32 players unlimited rating
    Intermediate 37 players < 1600 rating
    Recreational 22 players < 1300 rating
    Novice 22 players < 1100 rating

for a total of 113 players.

The first part of the tournament was a quasi round robin of 13 rounds. The second part was quads (four person round robins). The final round 17 was KOTH.

The final Novice standings including last day results for those who like to see who finished strong and who folded. Three went 4-0, Five went 3-1, Seven went 2-2, Three went 1- 3, and Four went 0-4:

Five of the eight rated between 1000 and 1099 elected to play in the next higher section. As we all know the SCRABBLE rating system is broken and puts higher rated players in a section at a disadvantage. The five that are playing up are sacrificing any chance for prize money in order to earn rating points. The three that aren't playing up are sacrificing rating points to win prize money.

David Moss was confirmed to be a ringer. Paula Catanese's only previous tournament was about ten years ago.
