Here are the final standings of the 17-round Western Canadian Championship. Despite reduced attendance (possibly due to the WSC and some conflicting tourneys in the west) the event was a big success and we look forward to next year's event.

As mentioned, 100% of the entry fees were returned as cash prizes, so IMHO there is no need to post a financial report. All moneys were kept within each division, which explains why some divisions have more prize money winners than others. Prizes are in CDN funds.

Players not from Calgary have a state/province abbreviation beside their name. Sorry, I couldn't get everybody, so some have "??" listed instead. Those listed with "AB" are from places in Alberta outside Calgary.

Miscellaneous

Medals were also awarded to all category winners (except Best Phoney who gets a "horse's rear" trophy) and to the top three in each division. The winner of each division will have their names engraved on our club's big trophy, which features winners going back over 15 years.

A Scrabble Trivia contest was held in conjunction with the tourney. Players were given 40 (I think) questions to answer about various aspects of Scrabble, ranging from history to "legends" to the game's internationality. The winners, number of correct answers, and prizes are:

1st (won draw) Ruth Hamilton (OR) 22 (protiles)
2nd (lost draw) Paul Sidorsky 22 (NSA membership)
3rd (runner up) C. O'Sullivan (??) ?? (Everything Scrabble)

Evi Pike (ON) raffled off one of her infamous round Scrabble boards, with proceeds going to the Calgary Scrabble Group. The winner was Dorothy Klovan.

A local TV station had a camera at the event on a couple of days. I will keep an eye on the station's web site and post a link to any news transcripts that mention the Championship as soon as they appear.
