I'm a former air force brat, so I've lived a number of places across Canada, including Winnipeg, Cold Lake, Alberta, and Ottawa. I presently live in Toronto, Ontario.
I have an MA in Medieval Studies from the Centre for Medieval Studies, University of Toronto (purveyors of fine Latin exams), and two BA (Hons) from Carleton University (Interdisciplinary Studies and History) in Ottawa.
I presently work for University of Toronto Press as an Assistant Acquisitions Editor in Humanities, which includes (gasp!) Medieval Studies! Ladies and gentlemen, you can get a job directly associated with your humanities degree! It CAN happen!
On an even more personal level, I am 29 years old, and the eldest of two childen. I am unmarried, although I am presently happily involved with John Chew. I live with my two roommates, Heather and David, who had their beautiful, perfectly organized wedding (Excel charts everywhere!) on August 22, 1998.
I have studied martial arts off and on for about ten years now, but believe me, the time is no indicator of how good I am. I am hopelessly out of practice, but hope to pick up classes again in the fall. I picked up most of my training by osmosis when I was living with Badger, the owner and head of the Young Forest Kung Fu Club in Ottawa. Badger and I had a little deal: he could try out any technique that he wanted on me, on the condition that I could do whatever he did to me back to him. Very few mistakes were ever made!
I am also planning on going back and nailing the PhD Latin exam at the Centre for Medieval Studies sometime in the next two years, as well as trying to learn Japanese. My theory is that since the two languages have nothing to do with each other, I won't confuse the two on the exam. Long long term plans include going back to school, and either getting my PhD in Medieval Studies, or starting something completely new. There is nothing like working outside the university, even in a job as wonderful as the one that I have, to make a person pine for school. Perspective is gained: there are so many things that would have been done differently if I had only known then what I know now...I will appreciate school that much more when I finally make it back.
Upcoming plans include going to Vancouver in October to (hopefully) witness the arrival of my new niece or nephew, going to London, England in January in accordance with my desire to get off this damn continent before I'm thirty.
In my copious amounts of free time (ha!ha!ha!), I have started writing reviews for the SF Site, and have my first review up right now.
