On February 15th, 2006, fifty-three
of us got together to celebrate the founding of
the oldest and largest Scrabble club in North America.
Following recent tradition, we stuck to our regular weekly schedule of
three games, but had cake after the first game and a
photo shoot after
the second one.
We also had special prizes, donated by Baskin-Robbins Canada in honour
of our 31st birthday.
In Round 1, players were challenged to be one of the first five to make a play scoring exactly 31 points. The winners — Shirley Drucker, Roger Cullman, Joy Thomas, Janet Callaghan and Libero Paolella — each won a $2 coupon for Baskin-Robbins ice cream.
In Round 2, players were challenged to make the best ice cream themed word. The five winners won a commemorative ice cream scoop and a prepack of Baskin-Robbins ice cream: Elizabeth “LITRE” Spivak, Wes “CONE” Solomon, Lynda "OVERDOSED" Wise, Zev “SUGARIER” Kaufman and Tony “YOGHURTS” Leah.
In the last round, players were challenged to make one of the first five bingos using a three-point tile and a one-point tile. The five winners won a Baskin-Robbins T-shirt: Vera “RESCALE” Bigall, Trevor “TABLING” Sealy, Evan “BASOPHIL” Berofsky, Mark “MINUTER” Edelman and Rachel “BRAINIER” Matlow.
Finally, the players with the overall highest and lowest game scores took home a Baskin-Robbins frisbee: Glenn (563) Dunlop and Irene (189) Kennedy.
Thank you to Baskin-Robbins Canada for their generous sponsorship of this event, and to our club members for coming out to play Scrabble each week.
