At a little after 9:00 A.M. this morning, we began the first Prague Mind Sports Festival Scrabble Late Bird, a double-elimination (knockout) event in which nine competitors have each paid €20 in the hope of winning a single €1,000 prize. Double-elimination means that undefeated players are paired randomly with each other each round, as are players who have one loss. Everyone else gets paired KOTH without repeats, until only one player remains in contention. Special note for pairing weenies: if the top flight is odd, promote a random player from the second flight minimizing repeats; if the second flight is then odd, pair the alternate player (TD Craig Beevers) with a random player; if noncontenders want to drop out rather than just play for ratings, they may. |
