Commentary: Round 1

We welcome 17 players from the Mayfair International Academy School, from Years 7 to 10, who have come to play in a School Scrabble event here at the Marbella Mind Sports Festival. Four of them are bravely playing the game for the very first time, alongside a world champion and players from all over the world in the competitive division.

I gave a brief introductory talk on the basics of the game, and thought that I had covered everything one would need to know to play the game, but questions once play started showed I'd left out a few key details. "What do you do when you've run out of your seven tiles?" (You replenish your rack after each play!) and "Where does my first play go?" (Across the centre double word score.) were among my favourites.

As I mentioned in the Championship Division commentary, the commentary is going to be a little bit briefer than usual because we are short-handed with TD Craig Beevers playing; I will be taking and posting photos too, but they will go up at the end of the day.

In first place at the end of the round was Conor McLean (Spain), who beat first-time player Dominica Grauzelyte (Spain) 205-36.
