We welcome Ogedengbe Olawale (NGA) and Afam Nwadiaro (NGA), who have arrived from Nigeria just in time to join the event this round. To my knowledge, this sets a new record for the latest that a player has arrived at a tournament and been permitted to join the event in progress. The two are now tied for bottom place in Division B, with a record of 0-22 -1650. As the round finishes, Osaghaede Omijeh (NGA) beats and unseats leader Sammy Mangion (MLT), and his 460-222 blowout gives him now the only four-digit cumulative spread, +1279. Trailing him at +896 is Eileen Meghen (IRL) and +840 Sammy. Next round, Osaghaede will play Eileen; if Eileen wins, Sammy could still easily overtake her with a bigger win to finish in first. Over to A, where an unusual situation has arisen. Going into the final round, Chinedu Okwelogu (NGA) and Chris Lipe (USA) are tied for second place at 16-7 +1072, behind Helen Gipson (Sco) at 17-6 +1103. Rather than asking TSH to choose between them randomly for Helen's final opponent, I asked the players to draw tiles for the right to choose between Helen and fourth-ranked Theresa Brousson (MLT). Chris drew first and pulled but did not reveal a Z. Chinedu drew a B, and declared that he would play Helen. If Helen wins this game, she wins the event. If Helen loses the game by 15 or fewer points, she remains ahead of Chinedu but could be overtaken by Chris. If Helen loses the game by more than 15 points, the winner will be whichever of Chinedu and Chris have the higher margin this round. |
