In a surprise upset, Dan Sandu (ROM) beats David Eldar (AUS) 440-376. I don't get a photo, because they're too fast to square off the tiles. Dan says that he'll call me over the next time he beats David.

So Helen Gipson (Sco) beats Jayne Mackenzie (Eng) to take the lead on spread, 14-5 +1810 ahead of Eldar +1372. Theresa Brousson (MLT) is in third after beating fourth-place Chris Lipe (USA) 537-440. The top four will play each other twice to begin the three-game early afternoon session.

Lunchtime. From a staff point-of-view, this hotel has some of the best meal service I have ever encountered in all my years of running events. Shortly before lunch, a manager arrives, recites the menu, takes my order and will return with my food so that I can work through the break at my desk. (I was about to write an unqualified "the best", but I remembered that at King's Cup, a wide range of delicious food appears at frequent intervals at my desk without my needing to ask for it.)
