This round paired the top quarter of the field against the third quarter. The top three are Thacha Koowirat (THA) +236, Kian Boon Liew (SGP) +219 and Siu Hean Cheah (SGP) +213. There's a spread cap of 350 points in effect at this event, and it's usually invoked at least once, but not this round.
The biggest upset this round was by 992-rated Yash Gandhi (PAK), who defeated 1656-rated Thien Termpaisit (THA). Reports from the Penang Open last week are that the Pakistani players have artificially low WESPA ratings; it looks like they will be going home from Asia with a good supply of the region's rating points.
At the end of this round, Charnrit Khongthanarat (THA) joins us as our 99th player. We take a brief break for lunch before we play the remaining seven rounds without interruption.
