Sixth round of the main event, tenth round of the day. The poker staff keep asking if we are crazy to hold an early bird in the morning; they typically play from early afternoon until late at night. Yes.

Nigel Richards (NZL) remains undefeated, with a 550-217 trouncing of Tony Sim (SGP). One game back at 5-1 are Alastair Richards (AUS), Yi En Gan (DEU) and Michael McKenna (AUS).

After this round, we relocate to the Blue Note Bar next to the hotel reception desk, where we enjoy complimentary drinks and appetizers, Pramit Kamath (IND) and I lose spectacularly to Adam Logan (CAN) in a game of double-bag Anagrams on a white grand piano, and Dave Brannan awards prizes to the Early Bird.

The event staff were shaking their heads again at what happened next. I had told players that they had to be back at their boards by 9:30, after about a two-hour break in the bar, but that Craig Beevers and I would be back on duty by 9:00 for anyone who wanted to start early. At least half the players took us up on our offer. The event staff kept wondering aloud "Free alcohol, and they want to play SCRABBLE? What is it about that game?"
