My notes are skimpy in the evening, because I was beginning to run out of steam. Three hours of sleep last night, followed by an 18-hour day. Also, I spent much of this hour talking with David Schwartz, who is in charge of Scrabble for Mattel, and flew all the way here from Los Angeles to see what Dave Brannan and the Mind Sports Festival were all about. Nigel Richards (NZL) remains (ho, hum) undefeated at Board 1, after a 407-344 win over Michael McKenna (AUS), who drops back to 5-2. Alastair Richards (AUS) is the only one of the three who were trailing Nigel by a game to win this round, 494-364 over Yi En Gan (DEU). Adam Logan (CAN), after a slow 1.5-1.5 start, wins a fourth consecutive game to climb to third place, 5.5-1.5 +472. In fourth place is ratings underdog superstar Wojtek Usakiewicz (POL), whose rating is up 54 points so far from 1578. Low win of the event so far: Jim Wilkie (Eng) 334-318 over Nancy Alroy (ISR). |
