Most players returned on time from lunch, eager to play. William Wu (TWN) was somewhat delayed, as he had to give a television interview. Nawapadol Sayavesa (THA) and Amnuay Ploysangngam (THA), as usual, had to work their playing schedule around their tournament business. Maneeda Tanasanvimol (THA) and Weeranee Tanasanvimol (THA) rejoined the tournament after the pairings were printed, so I had them play each other; they were adjacent in the standings anyway, so it seemed reasonable. Amnuay ends up starting a game with John Barker (AUS) with only 51 seconds left on his clock, and puts up a heroic effort to lose only 317-343. Lunch has arrived for me, but I haven't had time to start eating the main course yet, and have kept myself going eating deep-fried bananas, yum. The crossword game theme song is currently being drowned out by an expert strategy session taking place immediately behind me (the nearest loudspeaker is two metres away). Jason Katz-Brown (USA) and Pakorn Nemitrmansuk (THA) begin their rematch at Board 1 on time, but are still playing now, with only three other games yet to report in. David Eldar (AUS) beat Siu Hean Cheah (SGP) and is temporarily in first place; if Jason beats Pakorn he will overtake David, as only a point of spread (and a win) separate them now. Pakorn will stay in first regardless, but will have his lead cut to one game if he loses Board 1 has reported in: it's Pakorn over Jason, 545-491 (the high game of the tournament); I look forward to seeing the game as soon as the annotator has finished entering it. So Pakorn stays two games ahead of David, with five players three games back: Ming Hui Hubert Wee (SGP), Jason, Chollapat Itthi-Aree (THA), Cheah and Kian Boon Liew (SGP). There are still eleven games to play though, so it's early days yet. After 27 rounds, the top two will advance to the final rounds to be played on the stage in front of the students. (The Pakorn-Jason game is now online, and it's a bingo-fest, including a triple-triple for Jason.) |
