The final day of play has begun, on which we play rounds 18-24 in a 2/2/1/1/1 schedule, wrapping up at around 17:45. First results in this round: Ruth MacInerney (Eng) 514 Nicky Huitson (Eng) 323, Mario Saliba (MLT) 455 Daniel Milton (USA) 353. Division AAs we begin this day, there is a good chance that Helen Gipson (Sco) will defend her 2011 title, and an outside chance that 2010 winner Mohammad Sulaiman (ARE) might be able to take it back. The 2009 winner, Lukeman Owolabi, is not in attendance this year, and the inaugural 2008 winner, Theresa Brousson (MLT) is likely out of contention. Helen is still in first place after a 393–538 loss to Evan Cohen (ISR) at Board 1, because over at Board 2, second-place Chinedu Okwelogu (NGA) lost Howard Wilde (Eng) by a clsoer 383–397, so all that has happened is that Siu Hean Cheah (SGP) and Evan have caught up by a game. Helen has 13½ wins and is 2:1 to win, Chinedu has 13 wins and is 4:1 to win, Cheah, 12½ +874 and 6:1, Evan, +580 and 10:1. Also in the running: Howard Wilde (Eng) and Sam Kantimathi (USA) on 12 wins, long shots. Division BThis is the second time that the tournament has been contested in two divisions. Last year's Division B winner, Margaret Armstrong, is not playing this year. One of our players is feeling unwell, and will spend at least the morning resting before possibly returning to play in the afternoon. Andy Gray (Eng) and Mario Saliba (MLT) beat Josephine Mayo (MLT) and Daniel Milton (USA) to pull a second game ahead of Daniel, who is one game ahead of Paul Mifsud (MLT), Josephine Mayo (MLT) and Ovidiu Tamas (ROM). |
