    Commentary: Round 19

    [ ]

    Go to: Before the Tournament, Round 1, Round 2, Round 3, Round 4, Round 5, Round 6, Round 7, Round 8, Round 9, Round 10, Round 11, Round 12, Round 13, Round 14, Round 15, Round 16, Round 17, Round 18, Round 19, Round 20, Round 21, Round 22, Round 23, After the Tournament.

    CHAMPIONSHIP

We came close to having to Gibsonize Nigel Richards (NZL) on spread this round. He had been paired with Weibin Toh (SGP) based on Round 17 standings, but had Toh lost his game against Graham Haigh (Eng) this round, Nigel would have had a lead of five games and 1853 points of spread with five rounds to go. We were prepared to ask players not to begin play, and redo the pairings if necessary, but Toh obliged by beating Graham, and has earned the right to continue playing Nigel until he loses a game (or the tournament ends).

Checking on the overseed prize, I see that Ewa Kondracka (POL) is currently leading in this category, in 13th place overall despite being the 16th seed, a difference of 3 places. Almost everyone else is within 1 place of their seed: remarkably consistent performance.

    RECREATIONAL

Suzanne Dundas (NLD) is Gibsonized for first place, and as Nancy Alroy (ISR) and Peggy Fehily (DEU) are only a game behind Pam Morris (AUT) and Paul Dundas (NLD), they get a chance to catch up to try for second or third place. But Pam beats Nancy, and Paul beats Peggy, so the next round will see Pam playing Paul for second and third.
