After a whole day of no director's rulings other than three calls to replace or repair defective FlipTimers, we had two real adjudications to make this round.

A player needed to go to the toilet after making an exchange play. At what point do the rules permit them to do so, barring emergencies? This one's easy: they announce the exchange, place the tiles they want to discard facedown, hit the clock and leave. When they return, they put the tiles in the bag and draw their replacements; in the meantime the opponent may make a play and hit the clock, but not draw replacement tiles.

A player accidentally causes the last tile to fall out of the bag during their turn. A strict interpretation of either WESPA or NASPA rules would call for the tile to be returned to the bag without penalty, either because it hadn't been mixed with other tiles, or because its egress from the bag had been unintentional. However, the offending player has clearly gained a great advantage through their action, inadvertent or not. We ruled the same way that we did in a similar situation in Prague, that the tile would be deemed mixed with the rack, and the X+2 overdraw penalty applied.

    CHAMPIONSHIP

Wayne Kelly (Eng) briefly has the high game record for the day, 599-324 over Wojciech Usakiewicz (POL), until Nigel Richards (NZL) eclipses him with a 602-308 vs. Dan Sandu (ROM).

With this win, Nigel ties Mark Nyman's record for 27 consecutive wins in ABSP rated play, set in 2001-2002.

Shanker Menon (IND) wins 425-359 against Ewa Kondracka (POL) and ends the first day undefeated +644, trailing Nigel's +1208.

One game back are Weibin Toh (SGP) and Theresa Brousson (MLT).

    RECREATIONAL

Suzanne Dundas (NLD) continues undefeated, 449-231 vs. Vicki Bradley (AUT), ahead now of three players at 5-2: Nancy +521, Peggy Fehily (DEU) +404, Paul Dundas (NLD) +261.
