    CHAMPIONSHIP

Nigel finishes the afternoon undefeated with a 492-312 win over Andy Gray (Eng); playing to form with an estimated rating increase of only two points. Theresa Brousson (MLT) loses her first game, a 506-381 blowout to Shanker Menon (IND), dropping to fourth place behind Weibin Toh (SGP). Shanker stays undefeated in second, but 320 points behind the leader in spread.

The biggest rating upset of the event so far was Ewa Kondracka's (POL) 411-404 win over Nuala O'Rourke (NIr); Ewa is rated 1200 to Nuala's 1581, but she has clearly been working on her game.

It's officially the dinner break, after which we play two more rounds, but we are permitting those who want to eat later to play through the scheduled break. 5 of the 8 boards opt to do so.

    RECREATIONAL

Suzanne Dundas (NLD) plays her first match against Pam Morris (AUT) and remains undefeated through Day 1, 5-0 +665, about a game above her expectation. Peggy Fehily (DEU) has a bye this round and next, so she's guaranteed not to fall below second.

Nancy Alroy (ISR) had the high win of the event so far, 508-285 over Zaffar Mahmood (AUT). Paul Dundas (NLD) had the low win of the event so far, 369-300 over Vicki Bradley (AUT).

This is officially the end of the day for this group, but those who want to sleep in are permitted to keep playing for up to three more hours. No one elects to do so.
