There were a couple of agonizingly high losses this round: Duncan Keet (ZAF) lost 457-473 to Brid Ni Bhriain (IRL), and Mario Saliba (MLT) 451-465 to Simon Gillam (Sco). Keet's is the highest loss in Class B. We started the round with Mikki Nicholson (Eng) leading Helen Gipson (Sco) both on 10–3, Mikki leading Helen on spread +1085 to +901. Mikki played Feargal Weatherhead (IRL) and won 548–324; Helen played Howard Wilde (Eng) and won 421–411; the two therefore retain their one-game lead. Of the players who had trailed them, Craig Beevers (Eng), Esther Perrins (AUS), Tony Sim (SGP) and Siu Hean Cheah (SGP) manage to win their games to keep the pace. Something weird is going on in the summary stats, and I'm coming to the conclusion that it is just a statistical anomaly. As of the last time I checked, the starting player had won 50.7% of the time, but averaged only 397.4 points to the replying player's 401.9. Usually, the difference between the two averages is 10-20 points in the starting player's favour, but it may be that in this case there have been an unusually large number of games played in which the lower-ranked player went first: the higher-rated player has been winning 69.4% of the time. |
