Play started on time this morning, with everyone accounted for, but without electronic assistance, as there was some difficulty locating a storeroom key. Players found their opponents and seating assignments the old-fashioned way, by consulting a handwritten list of fixtures; challenges were adjudicated by staff using the Zyzzyva iPhone App, until normal service was resumed 15 minutes later. At Board 1 this round, we have top-ranked Howard Wilde (Eng) playing local champion Theresa Brousson (MLT). The live video is at Board 2, where Sam Kantimathi (USA) plays Esther Perrins (AUS). We had one unusual rules adjudication yesterday, concerning whether or not it makes a difference if an overdrawn tile is accidentally exposed before the overdraw procedure begin. This morning, there was a dispute concerning whether or not a tile was accidentally overdrawn. It's another beautiful sunny day outside today, with a forecast high of 27°C; players and staff will be stepping outside to admire the view during breaks, at least those who aren't obsessively watching the scoreboard. Overheard this round... Data Entry Person: "Please check the arithmetic on this score slip. 409-358 is not 52." Player A: "Oh of course not, it must be odd. Here you are: 409-358 = 53." (Scores changed slightly to protect the guilty.) Tournament Director: "If you move a rack to another table, I will come down on you like a tonne of bricks." At the end of the round, a 483-346 win over Theresa Brousson (MLT) leaves Howard Wilde (Eng) the last one left undefeated, 7-0 +711. Trailing him by a game, but ahead on spread at +1189, is Esther Perrins (AUS), after a 539-279 win over Sam Kantimathi (USA). Also on 6-1 are Helen Gipson (Sco) +430 and Sam +167. Both Howard and Sam have won two games by fewer than ten points each. Helen just beat Ovidiu Tamas (ROM) 541-444, the second-highest game total so far, and the highest loss by anyone in Class C. Leading Class B is Simon Gillam (Sco), in 6th place overall with 5-2 +415; at the top of Class C is Ovidiu, 5-2 -118. |
