First result this round is Geoff Cooper (Eng) beating Pawlu Frendo (MLT) 368–334. I see on the back of their result slip that EPISTLED, QANNATS and TYIN were challenged, with one being unacceptable. Helen Gipson (Sco) beats Siu Hean Cheah (SGP) 467–394, by almost as much as in their last game in Round 11, and temporarily gains the lead. Craig Beevers (Eng) needs to beat Howard Wilde (Eng) to stay in first. Beevers loses a high-scoring 515–459 game to Howard, and drops to second, a game behind Helen. Mikki Nicholson (Eng) beats Joanne Craig (NZL) 467–424 to stay in third, behind Beevers by 38 points of spread. In fourth place is Tony Sim (SGP), alone at two games behind, on the strength of a 562–450 win over Theresa Brousson (MLT), the biggest game total so far and only the second thousand-point game. The last game of the morning takes a long time to recount, and ends in our first tie game, 394–394, between Brid Ni Bhriain (IRL) and Nicky Vella-Laurenti (MLT). Lunchtime! |
