As we begun the fourth and final day of the Fourth European Open Scrabble Championship, Mikki Nicholson (Eng) has a two-game lead and a good chance at winning this event for the first time. Last year's champion, Theresa Brousson (MLT), starts the day five games back in 11th place, and is a long shot to defend her title. The two other past champions, Nigel Richards (2010) and Terry Kirk (2009) are not in attendance this year. First result in: John Barker (AUS) 477 Nicky Huitson (Eng) 342. Last result in, following a lengthy recount that extended several minutes into the next round: Helen Gipson (Sco) 411 Joanne Craig (NZL) 408. Kevin Synnott (Eng) beats Vincent Boyle (Sco) 597–387, the highest win by anyone in Class C. The top four win, and remain in roughly the same order. Thanks to a 503–326 win over Simon Gillam (Sco), fourth-place Siu Hean Cheah (SGP) makes up some spread and is now 18–7 +881, behind Helen +1027 and Craig Beevers (Eng) +1528. Mikki has a big win on video over Gerald Davids (ZAF), 470–313, breaks +2000, and leads the field 20–5 +2051. Tournament simulations give Mikki about a 75% chance of winning, with Helen, Cheah and Craig splitting the rest. |
