Mario Saliba (MLT) crushed Reno Zammit (MLT) 584–235 this round, the highest spread since Nicky Huitson (Eng) beat Reno in Round 3, and the highest winning score since Esther Perrins's (AUS) 598, also in Round 3. Mikki Nicholson (Eng), Craig Beevers (Eng) and Helen Gipson (Sco) begin the round in the lead on 15–5; and play Esther Perrins (AUS), Brid Ni Bhriain (IRL) and Siu Hean Cheah (SGP) respectively. Mikki and Helen win their games 551–335 and 417–379, but Craig loses a close one 447–450 to join Tony Sim (SGP) a game behind the leaders. Viewer Makbul Manji points out that Helen and Craig are both averaging 452 points per game to Mikki's 471. At Board 6, Tony Sim (SGP) plays Howard Wilde (Eng) to the lowest win so far: 313–278. Some mid-ranked players have been asking why they are playing bottom seed Marion Loewenstein (ISR). The answer is, simply, that it's an *Open* tournament, where anyone can play anyone, so the bottom seed is going to get to play the lowest-ranked player that she hasn't played yet, and who is not in strong contention. At this point, that's the middle of the field. |
